It tempers the steel. After all the heating and hammering and cooling during the first part of the process, the metal is fairly soft. By heating it up and quenching it (when he dips it in water), then sticking it in the oven, he’s changing the crystalline structure and making it much more durable.

I’ve never been much of a NASCAR fan but I’ll be rooting for Kyle Larson moving forward, it’s amazing how meaningful the little things can be when times get tough.
