Clearly I don’t know what I’m talking about, but I wonder how the chips would have fallen if voting (at least in presidential elections) were compulsory in the U.S. like it is in say, Australia.

Honest question: if the electoral college were abolished, and elections were determined by popular vote alone, what difference would it make which states the votes came from?
Didn’t say there weren’t other options. I was just reflecting on the previous poster’s (your) pointing out that simply eating meat vs. consuming factory farmed animals have different moral implications. That’s my rough take
I’ve heard of studies (sorry to be so vague) that suggest the presence of older men — i.e. men who’ve outlived their reproductive/physical labor functions — in some societies seems to keep the rage and recklessness of the younger men in check. This is all theoretical. Still frustrating to think that only men can…
I know people who hunt for sport but it’s not their main food source (my dad hunted pheasants, which we ate...sometimes). My point was that most people who are so proud of being carnivores are still eating factory-farmed animals.
tell her how much meat they eat and how much they like it and if she will change her mind.
Literally none of the vegans I’ve met mention they are vegan until they are offered meat or in a similarly appropriate context . This in turn prompts meat eaters to feel attacked and defensively claim that vegans “never shut up” about being vegan.
Many people who are vegan for ethical reasons find abortion to be inconsistent with their values, so yeah pro-life vegans exist.
Yes, that’s kind of the point. I don’t know any meat eaters who hunt, kill and butcher animals in their natural state.
Pro-life vegans exist. Ask the internet.
Never in your life, seriously? I’ve known at least a few people (vegetarian not necessarily vegan) who didn’t eat meat since they were kids because they didn’t like it.
I don’t understand rejecting a person’s philosophy or ethics based on how annoying they are or aren’t. Gun-nuts are annoying as hell, yet that doesn’t mean I have to react by opposing the 2nd amendment. What if people had the same attitude towards pro-lifers? Should we publicly mock them with hideous abortion stories? …
I’d be afraid of naming my kid a name that was also a word. Her adolescent memories surely include tons of corny innuendos.
The statement “usually all men are hung up on is looks” understates how much less attainable the criteria for female sex appeal is vs. the criteria for male sex appeal
I agree popular entertainment sometimes portrays witches as other than pure seductresses (Bedknobs and Broomsticks). Sometimes it’s just women who have their own power and that’s enough to scare even the Devil (Witches of Eastwick).
Amen to that. Some people just _can’t_ suppress our gag reflexes. Short of sword-swallowing instruction, maybe. Also consider that some men _can’t_ orgasm from bj’s. Imagine them as a couple, my guess is not a lot of fellatio would be happening.
It saddens me that it’s actually old news as well. And yeah I was born in the 70s, raised on 2nd-wave feminism (my mom took me to the ERA March on Washington, can’t remember if it was the 70s or 80s) Sorry the last post was kind of my long-winded way of saying that lots of people get female privilege confused with…
To continue on this tangent: the empowerment discussed in the days of mid-century feminism was called “women’s liberation” for a reason. The idea was that you got an education and a career to “liberate” yourself from dependency on/protection of fathers and husbands. I noticed the quote where the other witch says…
oops double post
