I think it’s because it’s an uncomfortable reality. And instead of dealing with uncomfortable truths head on, people tend to shoot them down and look away.  It's just easier that way.

The way he tells the story it seems more like he was concerned about the kids coming to the island having potable water rather than just being beholden to Billy for seemingly incomprehensible reasons.
