I can honestly say that, in my personal experience, the whole "how much large fish (including tuna) is safe for pregnant/nursing women" was decided over 20 years ago: No more than 2 or 3 cans per month, if memory serves. It hasn't changed since then, as I also had a "surprise" a few years ago.

If you want all the amazing nutrition of tuna but have worries about mercury, try smaller fish! Their shorter lifespans mean that mercury accumulation is minimal. There are more sustainable, less toxic tuna options out there, but of course they cost a bit more than Chicken of the Sea. I recommend the Wild Planet brand, which produces pole & troll caught smaller tuna that have bioaccumulated less icky stuff.

I am a dietitian and I recommend sardines as a safer, also inexpensive choice that is shelf stable for those with limited access to things like cold storage or cooking. Some people don't like the taste, but much like tuna it can be doctored up to be less offensive.
