As long as the $750 goes toward the cost of purchase, and with it being fully refundable if you don’t complete a purchase,  I don’t see an actual issue with this.

I like the car, but not the price. This is just a dealer that is trying to cash in on the current insanity in the market, for which I don’t necessarily blame him, but he isn’t getting the money from me.

100% agree.  Most people have lost track of the concept of “get something you like” regardless of whether it is the popular or collectible choice.   Plus if you like the oddball stuff the price of admission is generally lower.  Counterpoint is that the price of maintaining may be higher due to scarcity of parts.
