I think the amazing thing to take away from this and so many other stories from this time period is that despite white america’s attempts to treat the enslaved as mere chattel and beasts of burden is the ingenuity of the slaves in their efforts to assert their humanity, whether it is learning to read in violation of

This is some really cool history, but dammit! Now I’ve got to fight my inner Becky, who really, really wants to link to Steve Martin singing “King Tut.”. Yes, on the Root, and this article specifically. At least it’s distracted me from Afghanistan news, Haitit news, and general Covid news.

I can’t imagine a fate any cruller!

Why are “crooked cop” or “accidentally fermented lemonade” the only two options here? I’ve known tons of people who spike their own drinks/water bottles so they can get away with consuming alcohol while driving/sitting at their desk at work/etc.

Wait... they field test beverages?

Wait. What is this terrible sounding “sharing” thing you speak of?

as a former girl scout who sold cookies door-to-door in the olden times before the internets, i am always down for new cookies to try in the hopes that girls will continue to fund their troops’ awesome activities with cookie sales. i will def give these a try come january, even if the kids these days are soft and only

Just fill me in when you’re in custard-y for these tearable donut puns.

You’re just jelly.

We could always sprinkle some more in.

My eyes glazed over at this joke.  And thus, the entirety of donut puns has been exhausted forever.

Donut make these kinds of jokes.

It could work. I have yet to see a hole in this plan.

OR the 1997 certificate was legit and SHE was the first wife who never got over him and/or was somehow getting revenge.

You have to take a state test to be a licensed inspector.  Also the inspection license is held by the individual not by the dealership so you as an inspector are liable, not the dealer.  If the dealer sells a car and state troopers find out it fails inspection you can lose your license and be fined.  I really don’t

Yep. That’s exactly why she had the first service and placed the first stone/memorial. So they’d have some place to visit. And the story is, nope - they had no idea she subsequently moved him.

Meh, dealers inspect their own cars in Maine. Get caught not following the rules, woe betide you, the state police take inspection shenanigans VERY seriously.

There may have just been one complaint, but the DMV found multiple instances of this happening when they investigated.

This certainly seems to be the proper take, based on what facts are presented here. Funeral Home saw a chance to get paid twice for 1 service, and took it, hoping no one would ever dig (oof, pun intended, but I’m sorry about it) into it ... and then got outed by an employee who thought it was both scummy AND scammy.

Can confirm. Lived in NC for about 6 years. They’re probably the better DMVs of any state I’ve been to. Mainly because the license office and DMVs are separate entities and the wait times(pre-COVID) weren’t all that painful. And they’re real sticklers for paperwork.
