So, now Jezebel's making light of possibly real physical consequences of birth control on Jezebel? Well fuck me.

No it's just not possible that taking hormones will change your mood at all. Why would it be?

Not every single thing that touches upon race IS racist! You're right!

Why couldn't a black person be the carrier of a gene for red hair? Recessive genes can be passed down for generations.

No, no, no! We mustn't open a can of whoop ass! Then we'll be the angry black lady. Because what's the big deal?

Well, men don't have uteruses to wander about their bodies and cause hysteria, so of course they couldn't possibly suffer from it.

Also: let's talk about the word "hysterical"

Xkcd's take:

Agreed. I discovered it online around 2000 or so, when I was still a wee lass of 18-19. I remember reading this and thinking, you know, that's true, some men DO always act like we're crazy anytime we have the slightest complaint. That was one of many revelations I had thanks to The Onion.

Yes to everything in this thread. Gaslighting is so infuriating because no amount of responding to the person will make it stop. For me, identifying it is helpful, but has not effect on the guilty party (this is all just in my experience, of course). Oh, but I wish there WAS a way to make gaslighters take a critical

I heart the Onion so much! They always manage to nail it with their social satire, just perfect!

It came from the doctor that was quoted, the head of an organization that studies men's health, the International Society of Men's Health. I think putting "refuse" in there was a shitty judgement call on the part of the journalist, but this is not hard data to generate. Census records give you the number of adult men

Citing that men are less likely to see a doctor, which has been shown to be true based on many studies, is not sexist. It's a serious public health issue that needs to be identified and discussed. Saying, men are fucking idiots because they never go to the doctor and they're all going to die of tetanus/heart

You havee seen one? I've never seen one! I mean, it's an office for those who have a difficulty getting along with disabilities, and my therapist swears he has a few, but I've yet to see it. Except my husband, when he comes around With Me. And I thought all the ladies stared bc he's so handsome!

It's definitely worth a try. But usually the type of person who will gaslight another person is not going to listen to sense or logic about what they have been doing.

Dude, right? People can be funny about what they will and won't tell their health professionals. Mr. Strawberry Jones runs to the primary care doc every time he gets a sniffle, yet has to be reminded to tell his psychiatrist and psychologist out loud, in English, that his depression is getting worse.

I think having a feminist partner who thinks he's even more crazy than I am is the only thing that keeps me sane. Otherwise, I second your comment.

Their conclusions aren't really warranted, that's the problem. "More women are seeking treatment for mental illness" is true. It doesn't follow that more women *suffer* from mental illness though.

Yeah, no, this is not what sexism means.

The Onion's classic take on sexist gaslighting:
