Yes, iOS was getting better but has taken a step back in most recent updates as they keep making it more aggressive. I think they should have stopped right after they rolled out multi-word correction, like fixing new york to New York instead of just new York. It has gone downhill slightly since then IMO.
I tried Hacker's Keyboard on my phone and didn't really like it. Unfortunately, my Android device is a phone and not a tablet, so I really need something with 1 handed use and good auto-correction. Hacker's Keyboard was lacking the second.

None of them are perfect, but the iPhone has the best auto correction by far, which is what I'm referring to. The funny thing is, the iPhone auto correction actually got better for a while, but iOS 6 and 7 both seemed to be downgrades in how it does things.
