If you think I’m talking about someone in a position of relative power like Gwyneth Paltrow, you’re clearly being deliberately obtuse and/or trying to pick a fight. I don’t have the energy for dealing with people like you, so done.

I hope the people bothering to respond to you, read this garbage. Discussing white supremacy is not an extremist thing to do. The status quo supporting and protecting white supremacy is extreme but it is not just done by extremists.

That’s part of the privilege of having the unmarked* identifier of “white”. We don’t have to identify as it culturally, because it’s so taken to be the default that everything else is compared to it. So one is a “vegan who walks to the Yoga studio” instead of a “black vegan who walks to the Yoga studio” (and probably

Thanks to centuries of systematic oppression in this country, we white people have the *privilege* of not needing to think about what race we are very often. It doesn’t make us any less white.

It’s his 3rd username doing so - I think he’s going for some kind of record.

“What I am arguing...”

And that’s the problem. We force labels on other folks (anyone not white by our “white” definition) and then get mad when we have to think about our OWN whiteness. We are white. Or have “come to be called white,” and we have to be accountable for that designation and what it means.

I refer to myself as a white guy all the time. I’m also originally a New Englander, current New Yorker. But if someone asked me to describe myself, I would say neither of those things. I would say I’m a white guy. About as white as they come. And I don’t even own a pickup truck.

“No one culturally says I’m white.”

Should a non black person wear BLM clothing/pins to show solidarity?

as a white person, i absolutely disagree with this.

What the fuck do you think white privilege is other than the advantages white people get that everyone else does not? We could call it Black oppression but white people don’t want to acknowledge that either.

What the fuck are you talking about? I refer to myself as white all the time. All white people do this. When we look in the mirror it’s pretty obvious. Trust me, we know we’re white. And I’m not even talking about the racist assholes.

“one of the great things about the days we live in is that a person can chose virtually any identity that they want.”

Alright, I would agree. I think white people do feel attacked when white privilege comes up. Meaning they think it takes away their accomplishments, they got what they got from being white, not actual work. Ironically similar to people who say a minority only got a job because of Affirmative Action.

At the end of the day it all comes down to intent I think. If you stick a BLM sticker on your car or wear a BLM t-shirt and call it a day – you’re probably just doing it to seem politically enlightened, relevant, and cool. While it is a nice gesture, you’re likely benefiting from it more than anyone else. However if

I wasn’t even aware South Africa is failing! But it kinda looks like it ain’t if the news is a judge. Certainly not as hard as Venezuela.

#AllYardsMatter

Why doesn’t The Root EVER report news from my backyard? It’s a place, too.

That deadly earnest smurf trying to make South Africa “A Thing” is the icing on the loony-toon cake.
