You forgot the BEST trick... Always have a powerful PC running with Chrome Remote Desktop enabled. The remote desktop APP on the Chromebook works a treat. This solves EVERY issue with not being able to run "application X". Only works when BOTH machines have net access but I constantly use my chromebook as a remote
