    @Pessimippopotamus: The Japanese certainly have thousands of years of style and culture to draw off of, it's just that there's been little opportunity for them to exhibit it in the automotive realm. Mazda seems the closest to distilling some Japanese philosophy in their concepts, but sadly they're just that -

    I would say that the Japanese already did, to a far less exotic extent: the Z32 300ZX was one such grand tourer that, despite its weight, still handled well enough to be interesting, with enough high-tech wizardry to be impressive and enough luxury to be comfortable.
