Thousands of people with Down's lead happy and long lives. Catastrophic is a word I would reserve for something like a child born without a brainstem.

I just didn't realize that Down Syndrome was considered a catastrophic disability. "Catastrophic" to me would be more like a child born without a frontal brain or something not condusive to life.

Down Syndrome is hardly a catastrophic birth defect though.
