We plan our holiday spending budget a year ahead of time. By the time Oct rolls around, we’re already in solid shape to handle all the expenses. Trying to jam through this period just a few months early is way too heavy a lift. It’s much more manageable to start setting aside the cash a little bit at a time.

This is exactly what we did with our youngest, who insisted on a destination wedding. We told her that her wedding gift was having us there because all the money we were going to use for a gift just got used up with plane tickets, hotel, rental car, and food.
