Regarding the deafness in one ear thing, I have a close friend who has nerve deafness in one ear and while he does have a special hearing aid which essentially picks up sound from one side of his head and transmits it to the other, he very rarely uses it.  He says that all it really does is make everything REALLY LOUD…
