I think the show also improved some of the problematic qualities of the books too (so far). They definitely played down all the racist undertones of Mr. Willoughby’s character (I think I stopped reading around book 4, so not sure where they go from there).

Yeah fuck Katie Roiphe

Katie Roiphe is the worst. She’s been the worst for as long as she’s been writing. But this is low even for her.

how is Roiphe not aware of something if her factchecker is aware of it?

I think outing herself was Donegan’s way of regaining control. Imagining what drove her to create that list in the first place, I doubt there’s nothing left else that she’s afraid of.

Yeah, this struck me as well. Either Roiphe is a coward who couldn’t ask the hard questions, or she went ahead and wrote it after Donegan’s refusal to participate, and let her fact-checker do her dirty work.

................This reminds me a Lot of the Military............sure, there are appropriate channels one can use to report abuse............but THE MINUTE you walk thru the door of that office, to follow the chain of command, and go “up the chain from the inside”, you are MARKED................before you even leave

Roiphe’s career has always been scolding feminists for doing anything. In 1994 she wrote “The Morning After,” about sexual harassment and rape on campus. It was about how women one college campuses were making victims of themselves, creating an atmosphere of fear, and shouldn’t be asking the government for social

This is going to be a weird sentence: My favorite part was when they mapped out the HJ scenario. So completely high school, something that everyone would have been buzzing about. It was wonderful.

Maybe it’s the angle, but that “stray husky” looks suspiciously like a pure bred golden retriever puppy...

It was the same with Katrina. My home town is on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and that whole area was devastated but was hardly mentioned in the news. This is why I will always love the Salvation Army, in spite of their flaws, because they were there, right away. They were the only ones who were there for several days,

Yikes, so sorry about the devastation in your area. I’ll always fondly remember that the series, King of the Hill, depicted a trip to Port Aransas. Somewhere up thread someone mentioned that relief efforts should emphasize that many towns BESIDES Houston need to be helped. I hope aid and rebuilding are underway as

Now just add “Rescue 911" and “20/20" and my Friday nights from age 11-15 can be complete.

he needs to go to the nearest Sephora and get colormatched. It’s obvious he has an oily T-zone and a nervous tick that causes him to rub his left eyebrow. A good primer would help with that. Sephora can help with that too, although I’d highly recommend one of the new primers from The Ordinary.

I LOVE Scott Michael Foster, and I 100% agree with your comment (also this song is freaking great). He’s come pretty close to filling the Greg-shaped hole in my heart, tbh. Especially since I am apparently a 13-year-old boy inside, and I DIED at the fart and poop jokes last week (and Maya taking credit for them).

The only thing this story is missing is that dude was the drummer.

Duck and cover is actually actionable advice against a real threat. It won’t save you from a direct hit from a nuke obviously, but nukes and bombs maim and injure a lot more people than are killed by the blast, and taking cover can make a big difference. This is more like safety theater. Not that school shooters

I do get how people can do it (which was obviously not the case in this situation). When this happens, it’s not typically when they are taking a cross-country trip with their kids, it’s when they are going through the rote motions of their day. Have you ever gotten in your car to head to ____, but gotten halfway to a

Agreed. After all, after Columbine, it seems everyone was hyperaware of that kind of stuff—turning in kids to the guidance counselor office if creative writing assignments had violence, etc. It seems like becoming overly cautious, like this video seems to suggest we should be, is just as dumb. I’m not sure that there

“Who’s there?”
