Backing in first is safer. You see clearly there is no obstacles, like children, when you approach the spot before backing in. Many children have been hit because they were behind a car that was backing up from a parked position. Not as many are hit head on.
I drive a SUV, and I try to back in whenever possible. Far safer. It keeps me from accidentally backing over some little kid who might otherwise be hidden below my rear window. When I back in, I can easily scan the area for any pedestrians before backing.
