In hindsight it’s funny. When it happened I was in such a daze that I had no concerns whatsoever.

Good point. I was an open water lifeguard and watched some clearly competent pool swimmers lose their shit in choppy water. Add to that the panic from a terrifying event and I am not sure an accomplished pool swimmer has much of an upper hand. The best thing the woman interviewed above did was to let go.
