Yes, Saman Gunan, who was from Thailand (not Taiwan as someone upthread said). A true hero.

I know with some folks “childless” is something that happened and they would rather have a child. But for those who have selected childlessness I have always assumed they had way better self-awareness than most. I think a lot of people (and I’m including myself in this) have kids because it’s just a thing you do. You…
This is such great news. The Thai Navy SEAL team, international rescue divers, doctors, pumpers, farmers, food service donations, laundry service donations, literally anyone involved are heroes. I am just amazed all 13 made such a treacherous rescue safely. Kudos to all those involved.
I hope Thailand undertakes a public health initiative to teach more of their citizens how to swim. Recently, I read that a low percentage of Thai citizens know how. I tried finding the article, and couldn’t but I think it’s like 20% of Thais know how to swim.
He was placing oxygen tanks for the rescue effort, and ended up running out of oxygen himself.
In the ‘90s, Wink Martindale hosted a show called ”Debt” with the same concept, only not specifically for student loans.
That’s correct. As a realtor, I cringe when I hear about how many people still have to pay $300 - 600 or more per month. That’s money that could be saved so they could buy a house. It’s one of the main reasons Millennials aren’t buying houses (or so they say when they’re studied.)
My wife and I would buy a house almost immediately if we didn’t have six figure student loan debt. We just can’t justify taking on any more debt with the student loans still hanging over our heads.
Saw a comment or tweet or something recently that pointed out that forgiving student loans would be the biggest and most effective economic stimulus possible in America.
I hope that one day you’ll get a much fairer student loan system, like the one we have in Australia. You don’t have to start paying back a cent until you’re earning at least $54,000 (USD $40,000) a year. It’s then paid back through the tax system relative to your income.
This is just the first step towards other dystopian game shows like Wheel of Food Stamps, Bowling for Chemo and Who Wants to Get a Kidney Transplant? It’ll be The Running Man before you know it.
The gofundmes is like America in a nutshell to me: of course your conservative Trump voting bible toting uncle is going to contribute $100 to your surgery. He loves you and knows you’re a good person. But a single mom working minimum wage jobs wants free childcare, fuck her! She’s lazy and entitled! Americans want…
I have this in the same mental category as GoFundMes for people experiencing major life disasters.
I think it’s a genius concept and perfect for Bread and Circuses America
I hated Gone Girl, is this story better? For what it’s worth, I thought that Gone Girl was no where near as brilliant and clever as it thought it was, it was convoluted, and I hated the stupid pregnancy thing. I want to like this one, but I also wanted to like Gone Girl because I paid actual money for the book...
Right. Sometimes it seems like people are using the #Me Too movement to hold actresses and other female celebrities to standards they don't even personally live by.
