I was once freelancing, pre-ACA. Had insurance. Young, healthy, got some sort of infection I’d never had before and haven’t had since. Spent a weekend in the hospital. Walked out with $30,000 in fresh new debt on top of my mortgage and student loans. AND I WAS INSURED.

It’s true, though. Swap “mob boss” for “exec” and the Sopranos doesn’t change that much. Just captures suburban middle-aged, upper-middle-class ennui so well.

I understand apathy. But if you find yourself saying, “hmm, I wanna watch something I’ve not seen before” — go Sopranos. Just do it. It’s just so damn good.

Apparently, we do.

Turnout in our primaries have always been shit. There was no mayoral race, either. On top of that, the Democrat race came down to a “rich guy, a slightly less rich Kennedy, and a guy we don’t know.” Also, most folks aren’t worried about Trumpism taking hold here. So people were apathetic as per usual.

Well, it’s Illinois! Blue but not bright blue. Relatively centrist and incumbents don’t get voted out easily. I don’t think the progressive wing should wring its knickers too much.

Meh. I live here. We’re a blue state but relatively centrist and incumbents don’t get voted out easily. I don’t think the progressive wing should wring its knickers too much.

Idiocracy wasn’t meant to be a documentary.

I can see how it comes across that way.

I am pro-immigrant, but how does saying “dizzying shift” read as racist? I mean, yeah, if you imply a town is declining because LatinX are moving in, yeah, that’s racists. But saying demographics shifted massively in two decades is just factual. What am I missing here? Asking honestly, not trolling or defending Tucker

Meh. The movie has issues but it’s not that bad. And let’s remember the context of 1999 — what’s racist and sexist now wasn’t necessarily considered to be so back then. That doesn’t necessarily make it right, but the context matters. So many of my favorite movies from the 80s and 90s would be awfully unacceptable now

Welcome to Illinois! Voter apathy has always been a thing here. Not sure why. Do people think their vote doesn’t count because of the “machine” (which has much less power than the old days) or because most parts of this state reliably one side or the other? Are people just too busy or lazy to care? I honestly don’t

Yeah, most of the Chicago burbs weren’t going Trump. Even the conservative areas seemed mostly never Trump. Except the more rural parts at the edges of the metro.

True, although how liberal is that district? I think it’s kinda centrist. Regardless, he has the name recognition. Politics as usual.

DuPage is getting more liberal as lefties move out there to raise kids. And it was never quite as socially conservative (depending on the town) as rural areas. It’s gonna be a very centrist area soon.

This isn’t surprising. Chicago is center-left, with some progressive population, while the burbs vacillate from center-right to center-left, and downstate is Trump town. Aside from the Trump crowd, which was once a group of standard Republicans, this state doesn’t do extremes (on either side) well.

It’s Illinois. Home to extreme centrism.

Life-long Illinoisan here (and a liberal, for what it’s worth). The corruption is real. Not all pols are corrupt — Obama seemed mostly clean, as have others, and the corruption is less than what it was during the Daley years (especially the first), but it’s real. And it infects Republicans, too (see Ryan, George).

I can’t tell if that pic is of the real one or Fey. Wow.

As I understand it, the bite kills you, it doesn’t make you turn. What happens is, you turn if you die of anything but head trauma. So the bite kills you, then you turn.
