When I was a collegiate swimmer we would work out for about 5 1/2 hours a day, 3 days a week, and 3 hours the other days besides Sunday. This was 6 months out of the year, and we still had plenty of time to go to class and study. It's possible.

I think the more interesting question, given how physical people have been throughout most of our development, is why 6 hours of physical activity a day now seems so extreme to us.

Former college athlete here. I've done six hours a day for months on end. Between sprint practice, weight lifting/plyometrics and playing/practicing soccer, I definitely logged in serious hours, especially pre-season while getting back into shape.
