Credit where credit is due. This is a car that is run pretty much constantly in an extreme environment and driven by people who are not the owners, nor passengers who probably care much for the vehicle.

While I do not disagree with your reasoning for this light oddity to happen, sometimes rear fog lights and brake lights are in ‘one’.
There’s not much weight in there. Way less than its capability, even with 1 or 2 people in there.
