These guys are fucking obsessed with the idea that maternity care and maternity leave is “getting one over on them.” See also: Gorsuch’s comments to his law students about the delicious scam of maternity leave. God forbid they have to help pay for the babies they claim to love and value so much. Women should only…
Seriously. Why the fuck do I have to pay for his testicular cancer screenings? Why do I have to pay for anything that doesn’t affect me directly? I pave my own roads and teach my own schools and put out my own fires too! I AM AN ISLAND AND MY ISLAND HAS NO MAN-PARTS.
If you wanted to go to law school with a kid, you should have been born a man like God intended.
These fucking people. What’s next, a clubbing baby seals amendment?
Which is a problem because with other groups we’ve said “hey, we need to do a better job of being inclusive” whereas here for Jews it’s more “well boo fucking hoo”.
This was so dismissive. I read the other piece. The other piece made me think about the other groups of people who have taken issue with the Women’s March and the platform. This Jezebel piece just felt like one girl kicking dirt in the eye of another. Why? What was the point of that?
Surely the point of these recent op-eds is that Jewish women are being actively told they have no place in the feminist movement if they are also Zionist? Which is not at all the same thing as looking around and saying I don’t want to play in your sandpit because you disagree with me on something.
It’s worth remembering Scalzi’s Law: The failure mode of “clever” is “asshole.” In my case, this just baffled me, but I can see how some people might take it the exact wrong way.
The two state was orignally proposed by the United Nations. Israel has only been in occupation of the West Bank after the 1967 War.
Yes, that is the heart of the issue, the definition of Zionism. All I can do, as someone who loves Israel and loves Judaism and also loves people in general, is fight against oppression in whatever small ways I can. Sadly, beyond donating small sums to various charities, and voting/being loud, there is not much I can…
And as everyone knows, the best jokes are the ones you need to explain in the comments section!
I know (from other comments) what this was supposed to be about
Right- this is where actually knowing Emily Shire is useful. The article title was a response to Linda Sarsour’s statements re: feminism and Zionism. She doesn’t believe it is one or the other, she’s just dismayed that Sarsour and others such as Rasmea Yousef Odeh are given places of prominence.
Hamas have genocide as a mission statement. Forgive me for not being so generous on them.
I kind of agree, but I think a lot of people in progressive movements don’t really realize they’ve internalized a lot of antisemitism just from living in Western culture. I think people believe that because Jews aren’t being as actively persecuted anymore, the Holocaust is remembered as a national holiday, etc.,…
I know. That shows a lack of understanding about Zionism. There are bigots who fly under the banner of Zionism, this is true. But there are bigots who fly under any banner.
That makes a lot of sense, yes. I see the distinction there. My response would be that it is important to have a nuanced view of what exactly we mean by Zionism. There are Zionists, like myself, who are against the oppression of Palestinians. We also know that Hamas is a terrorist organization with ties to Iran. And…
The belief that Israel should be a sovereign nation is the antithesis of the belief that men and women are equal?
