I agree, why is this even a thing? In the real world it just doesn’t matter.

You are right that the death penalty does little to stop these things from happening. In my opinion it is because the death of the guilty person is so far removed (by time) from the incident that it doesn't prove to be a deterrent. The punishment needs to be swifter.
