Yes, political isolation is a much better choice. Leave the rest of the world for the Russians and Chinese to control/manipulate/dominate/intimidate/intrude upon.
That is a reasonable opinion. On the other hand, if we had said no, the Libyans could easily have turned to the Chinese or the Russians. We would much rather be the ones the Libyan government turns to first.
It doesn't obligate us to do anything. The point is that we did not go in unilaterally and commandeer this vessel. A nation we are friendly with asked for our assistance and we gave it.
