One of my favorite ads from back when I was backpacking was an ad from a company that sells decent if heavy tents. And their ad said, “Our competitor’s tents are rated for Mount Everest. Ask yourself- when’s the next time you’re going to Mount Everest?”

Totally get where you’re coming from- it’s a cool thing being done with cars. But after this last 2 weeks, it feels like anything related to Elon’s cash cow has to be reevaluated. It’s getting a little “this mr hitler seems like bad news but the people’s car he commissioned is dynamite!” Am I being overly dramatic?

Statistically speaking, 82+% of americans live in urban/suburban areas. So really, there is no good time to buy a 4Runner. Because no one needs this thing.

Fuck this. Nope. Tesla can fuck right off. Don’t care if this is the greatest rally car ever, don’t care if it represents a colossal jump forward, All Teslas are now poison fruit.

But it’s just a trick. A distraction. Oh, we’re wasting all this money on foreign aid- look look at the waste! And it adds up to... less that 1% of the entire budget.

None of them- the number of people who actually need a GRRRR HARDCORE OFFFFRRRRRRROAD TRUKKKKKKKKKKKK is so insignificant as to be statistically zero.

But Kissinger, for all his many, many, many flaws, had a vision of something other than “I like disrupting things and taking ketamine”

Here’s the thing- Aid money, much like modern art, is easy to make fun of out of context. Like, herp derp we gave them how much for apples containing water buffalo vaccines? (this is made up but you’ll get the point) Why are we saving water buffalos? that’s stupid.

*sigh* EVERYONE knows the coolest bond car was the flying AMC Matador from “the man with the golden gun”

the smoot hawley tariff nonsense was passed in 1930, after the great depression had already started. To be fair, there had been a long series of expensive and disastrous tariffs reaching back 30 years at that point because the wealthy wanted more and gave zero shits about the damage they caused to the regular folks.

The cultural damage is the point. The cruelty is the point. The folks who are behind this are the same folks who fought civil rights, who fought the new deal, who thought that slavery was fine, who thought that the trail of tears was a fine idea and who probably thought the war for independence was a terrible idea.

So, we’re gonna fuck up the auto industry on the american continent while china’s auto industry gets stronger and stronger because as it sits now, they don’t need us at all. We’d be a fairly tiny addition to their market. And europe can focus on the chinese market and forget us, as again, we are a drop in the bucket

If we go with what cars have tended to become classics (or at least highly desirable) in the past, I’m gonna say it’ll be stuff that’s available cheap because they made a billion of them, easy to get parts for because they made a billion of them and was in no way shape or form cool before someone figured out you could

I am looking forward to a year and a half from now when I can move and I will no longer have a 450 mile drive several times a month. If charging infrastructure in the areas I drive was better I’d go electric but it’s not, so for now, I’m stuck with gas.

I mean you’ve had to throw in so many qualifiers that it kind of proves my point though- as long as you can find a good example (as opposed to most of them) from a specific 5-8 year period, as long as you don’t want it to be a comfortable, reliable daily driver, it’s enjoyable. They are gorgeous and they sound amazing

Honestly, its the olds, a category I am fast approaching.

If one goes from an enthusiast perspective instead of a rational one, the rock-solid reliability of cars that enthusiasts hate.

Ohmygod Alfa Romeo is dead. Just let it die. Ditto Maserati. Ditto Jaguar. Ditto so many brands that had their heyday back in the 70s and 80s. Just let them die.

To paraphrase the brilliant Roy Wood, Why does everything “manly” have to be badass or death-adjacent?
