Except that, when Toyota builds them (like the prius) they tend to be some of the most reliable vehicles on the road.
The big Japanese brands have built some awesome UJM/retro bikes but as far as I remember, most of them didn’t sell well. Kawasaki’s W650 comes to mind.

The downside with the shared audi platform was that sure, you paid 25 k for a nice basic car- my Jetta/golf wagon was fine- but your maintenance and repair costs were that of a much more expensive car.
