Worker protections generally arose out of collective bargaining. Domestic workers are far more likely to be employed independently, thus have no collective to support them in bargaining.

Mine is frying leftover mashed potatoes with hunks of cheese.

Part of the problem is, the parents are usually on the side of the practitioners.

Also, rarely done in ways that are sanitary, almost always done in ways that cause long-term harm, and is a cultural--not religious--practice.

Uncanny Valley?

As if it’s not possible for poor people to receive nice gifts, to have owned nice things before experiencing a change of circumstances, to purchase secondhand. As if a rare fancy meal out would make the difference when measured against tens of thousands of dollars of debt. As if they had other options for their

I hugged Neil Gaiman. He was MC-ing the Ig Nobel Awards one year when Amanda Palmer was guest musicianing for them, and had a mob of people go up for autographs and selfies after. But I lose signed things and didn’t have a functioning camera, so just asked him for a hug. He gives really nice hugs.
