For some time now, I've been using a tool called Sizer that allows you to specifically define the size of any window. I use this to make sure all my IM chat windows are the same size; to resize and center my e-mail and browser windows, etc. It's a great tool!

I have tried each Firefox 3 release since the second Alpha drop, but always went back to Firefox 2. One reason was due to addon functionality, but thanks to the aforementioned Lifehacker fix, I've disabled compatibility checking and still retained Adblock's function (whew)!

@kurt and @gorilly — wow, this really shook me up. Mainly, I feel like Lifehacker gives fairly good advice to users about good security practices, but this article almost pissed me off! A very irresponsible topic, in my opinion.

VOTE: IBM Lotus Sametime 8.0

I'm kinda with qrius on this one. Any attempt by Microsoft to be viewed as more ambivalent towards open source is (IMHO) just a side effect of letting beta testers provide feedback on their code.

@iomegaman5: Wow. You stated `consider that the reason why I now do 90%+ of my downloading through my job's T1 line behind several secure firewalls...`

How about Ctrl-Shift-Del? Clearing my browser history for the sake of privacy is my #1 priority. Oh, I surely use all the others mentioned here, too...

thejart has it right. This tip is for a GNU/Linux or UNIX ssh client, not the server. There's no parameter in the OpenSSH server configuration called `ServerAliveInterval`.

This is great and all of that, but I rarely see on Lifehacker any mention of the huge security hole that this implies.

Ditto FREECHAOS — how about an article called, `Valentine's Day Gifts for the Geeks to Buy for Their SO's`???

That old adage `dress for the job you want, not for the job you have` still rings true.

No love for deluge (Linux)?

I would love to wear a watch regularly. But honestly, the band hits my laptop's wrist rest and so it messes up my typing! Between my cell phone and my OS's clock, I don't really need a watch.

Dismay! Tooth gnashing! I submitted this tip to Lifehacker about 8 months ago, and got no reply. Oh, well. It's still a great tip.

Ahem! Linux?

Maybe I am missing something. Is BookBump a downloadable application? I looked at a few screenshots on their Web site, it seems to be a Mac application?

@mike1731: `I programmed in all of my car's scheduled maintenance intervals, then log each fillup.`

@johnmarkos: In addition, it seems like some of the regular addons such as CustomizeGoogle and Gmail Notify are also incompatible. I'm sure the authors of those and other extensions will get busy soon (I hope).

I agree that DVD Shrink is the bomb. There's a Linux version called xDVDShrink, but the Windows version is a ton better in terms of allowing you to selectively exclude things for the sake of improving compression ratios (e.g., foreign language audio).

Gina, thanks so much for sharing this tip! I have been needing this functionality for about 1.5 years. I've just been lamenting the fact that there was not a way to do this; I've been waffling back and forth between hiding and showing the Bookmarks toolbar. Now I don't have to! Thanks again...
