There was probably some snafu that caused the plane to be boarded before they realized it was overbooked. It seems like kicking people off after they’ve gotten on the plane leads to more difficulty for psychological reasons.

I’ve seen them require/ask for volunteers to deboard for an incentive after boarding many times. Never seen them beat the shit out of someone who didn’t want to do it though, at least not in my experience
