After this, every change is done by pulling the gear lever forward or backward - towards yourself for upshifting, and away from yourself for downshifting.

There is no such thing as a DOHC EJ251. The 251 was the start of the "Phase II" motor, and had external leaking issues. The EJ25D, which was DOHC, did also have headgasket issues; this was a "Phase I" motor, and was installed up until model year 1999 in some Legacys.
