What’s your favorite non-coastal (I’m including Portland, Seattle, Atlanta and the Gulf state cities here), non-Chicago city to visit?

Why are so many of you DC- or DC-adjacent-based?

Hey, I didn’t say I had to bring its people! The coast is so stunning, and the area around Eugene is pretty rad. I saw Green Room, though—I know what happens in the woods.

Tennessee is quietly great but has no beaches.

Yeah, I was only in Nashville for a night, but goddamn... it’s one of the best things white people have ever made. Memphis has its charms, too (the Stax museum is a music nerd’s wet dream) although I understand that’s not a particularly common sentiment around the US.

Sentimental attachment (lived there for three years as a kid, Busch Gardens is the shit) + nice diversity of geography (beautiful beaches, rolling hills, southern swamps), good weather, good music (D’Angleo, Clipse, Missy Elliot) and history for days. I love a good hardscrabble city, which is why Detroit and NOLA are in there. Also, the music in both is tough to beat (Nashville and Memphis were also getting some strong consideration. Music + greasy food is all I really want from a city). 

What if you could only take 4 cities (but not the state) and 4 states (but not the major cities)?

With Michigan, you get Motown, Stroh’s, the best architecture outside of Chicago AND a depressingly affordable cost of living.

Even if this were true (and I doubt it is), as a Canadian, I am MORE than fine with the poorest, most disadvantaged people in the country getting a “free” night in the hospital to deal with an OD, cuz given how fetnanyl has ravaged the DTES, it’s a sure of a fuck lot better than dying.
