There was proof (blood, anatomical signs) that she was sexually assaulted at the time of the murder; there was less proof (or none, depending on which coroner you ask) that she’d been assaulted prior to the crime (i.e., chronic, repeated abuse).

The theory was he hit her head in anger, then the parents garroted her to simulate a criminal homicide to cover up his spontaneous assault. She was never stabbed though.
