Unprofitable stories already didn’t get published. Editors approve investigations, stories, titles, etc that they think will get eyeballs on the page/screen.
People said the same thing about wagons, candles, streetcars, et Al.
This is the view of the media taught in school so I think that's why this myth is so pervasive. (At least in the 4 public schools I attended in the 80s and 90s and in college (science major)).
