Yeah, I'm so sick of the romper bullshit. It's like the "man-bun." At a certain point, continuing to needle men for adopting traditionally female-coded sartorial choices. It was just last month that that senator made that crack about "a guy in a tutu" asking for a fight. These responses are on the same spectrum.

I don't know if it's a generational thing and I'm too old to get it (I'm not that old), but man, do I remain ever-mystified by the appeal of Katy Perry. Belching and clomping are the best words to describe what she does. And emphasizing weird syllables (listen to her "Unconditional" song). She can't sing, she can't

Perfectly described.

Got it. One thing I think I can leave untagged is that the Offred of the book and the Offred/June of the show don't always seem to have the same motivations, and my brain is constantly at odds with itself, trying to reconcile what I know with what the show wants me to know. The show branches out to give us different

I really love this response, but but before I respond back properly I want to know if you've read the book or not. There is something you touched on but I don't want to spoil things from the book if you plan to read it or are reading it.

Hot response, bruh

Queer people who have had millennia of smears against them for not presenting the way society would have them present would like a word with you.

Why did he start using different pronouns?

I guess the GOP is on to something with those bathroom laws, then.

No, they aren't straight enough to ignore this.

Sure. I just think it strained credibility for this world that a handmaid would ever have the chance to be alone with foreign visitors. As for her conscience, it still speaks to a larger freedom the women in the show seem to feel that is markedly different from the book. Maybe it's the shift from book to tv, but

I'm less bothered by the younger Serena Joy than I am the Commander and some of the other changes. It does highlight Serena's complicity.

34, but yeah, I think she's playing a little older and he's playing a little younger and both of them are much younger than originally written.

I'm curious what other people think, because I think he and Serena are roughly the same age in this and I don't think either is supposed to be much older than 40, if that. They're both considerably older in the book.

It goes back to something I harp about every single week - the women here have too much agency from how the handmaids talk to one another to Offred seemingly having the run of that house. Her being in the kitchen alone with the Mexican delegation makes no sense.

The end is a couple hundred years later, but the book is early 2000s. Offred's mother was a second-wave feminist.

Yeah, but he's clearly playing younger.

I agree with almost all of this, though I'm mostly okay with younger Waterfords, and that's mainly because I adore Yvonne Strahovski.

"In watching it, one keeps waiting for a reveal that this is imagined, a fantasy June/Offred plays out for herself before coming back to the present and muttering a few pleasantries. It is powerful?"

If you say so
