Yeah. I imagine they plugged a bunch of dichotomous categorical variables into a multivariate regression model and a lot of these confounding/interacting independent variables were cut off at relatively arbitrary points (e.g., 25g of processed meat) and the processed meat variable happened to be one in twenty that popp

One of the biggest issues not mentioned here is relative risk. About 3000 in 500,000 (about 0.6%) developed dementia. Processed meat eaters saw a relative increase of dementia of 44%, so the real increased risk for study participants was (at most) about one-third of a percentage point, but that sounds a lot less scary

Yeah, it is literally one piece. I’m assuming they tried different thresholds and for some reason 25g/day popped in their regression model. I’m also assuming that it’s an average daily intake, but the press release isn’t that clear. Still not a lot.

Yeah. Self report nutrition data is pretty suspect.

the associated risk of dementia rose by 44% for every 25 grams of processed meat eaten daily

Yep. See my comment to somedouche. I love sous vide as a “cheat” to long meat cooks (smoking, confit, etc).

Sure. I don’t do too many NY strips, and I’ve had success doing strips reverse sear (especially the strip roast beef I do for Christmas every year), but I get ya. My most done meats in sousvide are long-cook + smoke. I do turkey wings confit for thanksgiving, pastrami around St Paddy’s day (just picked up 5 cheap

I have an immersion circulator. I love it as a tool, but never use it for steaks because I like the reverse sear method so much better. Easier, and I think tastier. I aim for pulling out the oven between 110° and 115°F.

Roll has apparently angered some followers by not immediately offering a full refund of the losses incurred.

Agreed on the awesomeness of nuts, but are you saying 20g of protein per 100 calories or grams? For most nuts, I’ve seen about 6g per oz which works out to about 20g protein per 100g of nuts (which should work out to about to about 20g/500 calories).

Roasted/salted soy nuts are delicious and a great source of complete protein (11g per oz). Great hiking snack.

Dumb move. It’d be such an easy selling point for google to continue providing this perk for Pixels.

    $23 for a 10 pack? That’s gotta be a typo.

Sure! It has apps and widgets!

I would have loved to see how Pebble would have done with some marketing and resources behind them. I thought the could have made it if they had just licensed their OS/Software to Timex, Casio, and other watch brands. A Swatch with Pebble OS! I also thought their Pebble Core was an interesting idea.

The Pebble 2 HR was great for this too. A little thicker than the PTR, but the sleek design made it very low profile (I think it’s also technically smaller than the Lily). Added benefit of HR monitoring and almost a full week battery. Downside is that they skimped on the rubber housing for the buttons so mine was dead

The most neutral term would probably be “ad-subsidized.”

Our household definitely went through a couple Pebbles because of build failure. They really nailed the UI/UX, but build quality wasn’t the best. That said, I think some people are still rolling with their Pebbles.

Yeah. I have a Garmin now. I do like the fitness tracking. The big thing I miss is the voice reply to texts of my old pebble. I definitely don’t understand the obsession with using OLED/LCD screens.

And enjoy your never ending series of righting perceived minor internet etiquette “infractions,” Champ.
