I just bought one of these (mine’s like type A above) for about £4 off ebay, and chucked it in the boot with the spare. Makes changing a wheel a breeze.

For the UK, the coin test now is the edge of a 20p coin - 2.7mm. The legal limit is only 1.6mm though, which oldtimers remember was the rim of the old 10p piece. For a wet country that sees snow sometimes, I’m not going to chance it for the sake of a millimetre of rubber.
