For me, coffee fills the “pleasantly bitter” niche formerly occupied by beer. 

I eat healthily and moderately, I don’t drink, I’ve never smoked, and I don’t eat sweets. I get a lot of pleasure from a good cup of coffee and since it’s my one remaining food based pleasure, I would truly miss it if I had to give it up permanently.
