There is actually an entire episode focused on why Janine started to look like that. It was probably as close to an “arc” as the network would allow at the time (since it was believed that arcs are bad for syndication, and syndication was where the real money was).

I wasn’t really a fan when it was new, but the original cartoon actually holds up pretty well. Mostly because JMS was in the writer’s room for years, I’m sure (top notch voice cast also helps).
