The Raft was written for a men’s magazine (Cavalier?) that requires sex in their stories. Being a starving artist at the time, he obliged.
The Losers were bound by The Forces that Run Things to fight It. Having defeated It for the time being, their bond was broken. Bev used her idea of sex magic, essentially, to rebond them, and bring back their powers, Eddies tracking ability specifically.

I punched a Nazi for you, baby. Prom?
This commercial could be seen as a spiritual successor to Eraserhead, which is all about the horrors of sex, pregnancy, and parenthood.
There’s a good overview of this story in the fascinating book The Poisoners Handbook by Deborah Blum. Its both a history of poisonings and the story of the first Forensic science lab in America. I highly recommend it.
Ah yes, the orange uranium glazed Fiestaware! Simpler times...
Market pressures, of course!
