One thing that I realized years later about Pump Up the Volume is how it’s the last movie that shows a 1980s (-ish given its release date) high school. It’s also got a very ‘80s theme song that I love. It also reminds me of the Gotcha dancers on Parks and Recreation.

Go watch Gotcha!. There are scenes where people are running around with paintball guns and real guns on a college campus and nobody cares or reacts. It would be international news today. Also a cute movie.

I love Pump Up the Volume. The soundtrack introduced a young me to Concrete Blonde and my life hasn’t been the same. 

One of the better ones I remember in recent history was in The Invisible Man, the scene when they’re at the restaurant shocked the entire audience when I saw the movie.

The shootout at the end of Open Range is so, so good. There’s no ballet of bullets, it’s just brutal and hateful and chaotic, and largely filmed from the perspective of townspeople just trying not to get killed. It gives me goosebumps every time. Made total sense why we were watching it in class since it was the best version of Romeo and Juliet available and Romeo and Juliet was part of the assigned reading that year.
