I understand what you're saying, but I don't think the exact dates are important. As a social studies teacher, I want students to know when things happened in relation to each other, not necessarily the exact date of everything. That being said, I want them to know November 11, 1918, or December 7, 1941, etc. But…

I successfully taught my high school sophomores capitalism/socialism/communism using Hershey Kisses (these are low-ability kids mostly). I can't imagine how reading Marx and Smith at them would have gone down.
