I live LA now, but I grew up in relatively quiet small towns and I’ve never felt safer than when I was in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.

Happiness index is not that high (51th). It is actually quite low for a first world nation. There are many issues with the Japanese society as many immigrants will tell you. They don’t have a high suicide rate for nothing.
