I did. At first I thought I was remembering The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar but then I realized I was thinking of A Separate Peace.

There are definitely some different mechanics herein (the book is spotted with vignettes portraying characters we'll never see again), but the optimism thrives, and there are so many moments where the characters' humanity (and other species) reaches out and grabs the reader, that I'd put it a lot higher than a C-.
