It is, in fact, true HD. We discovered that local stations broadcast in both standard and HD. We pick up both, so we just favorited the HD ones so we only see those when we flip through.
Yeah, this was part of our "go wireless" strategy. We had been getting decent internet and super basic local TV, but we needed to cut down costs so I dropped the TV. Charter actually dropped the price of our internet, too, I guess afraid we'd go to another provider.
Those HDTV antennas are actually pretty great. I use one and the only times we've had reception problems are when commercial aircraft are flying right overhead (we live close to an airport), but even then it only affects one or two channels.
