Diesel is selling at a lesser price than gas here in Toronto as well.  However, that reversal has been recent.  Last two to three years, the cost of diesel surpassed gas by almost $0.50/gal here.

Getting the sulfur out of the fuel to make “clean” diesel fuel.  When I bought the car, diesel was about 10 cents a litre cheaper than reg. gas.  Then for the last three years, it was about $0.10 a litre more expensive.  Plus the cost of diesel goes up in the winter because the fuel has to be winterized.

Diesel engines are NOT more expensive to build - but the cost to engineer & build diesel fuel & emission systems add to the overall option cost. Injectors, lift pumps, injector pumps, DEF systems, particulate filters, etc. is what makes diesels costly to option into a vehicle platform.
