Your options are very limited with your criteria. An HHR SS might have the right blend of of performance and size at the price you’re looking at. There are fast cars in your budget, but the fuel efficiency and size restrictions aren’t leaving much to compromise. Plus you want automatic.
First of all, a used HHR SS and new GTI are hardly in the same category from the standpoint of price and general focus. Why are you cross shopping those? Were you really turned off that a tune was a separate purchase? Did you really think that VW is providing the tune themselves? Either way, APR shops are all over the…
Any close calls?
MK7 runs 14.3 stock and 13.1 with a tune and 93 octane. With the performance package you get Golf R front brakes and a mechanical limited slip differential. There is a lot of strong competition for the GTI now but if I may ask what were you cross shopping it with?
Dude cmon. I’m not a VW fanboy or anything but a GTI with a tune is legitimately quick. 250 HP and 300 TQ? And that’s on the MK5. The MK7 with a tune (as reported by APR) makes 316 HP and 371 TQ. That’s a gain of 87 HP and 114 TQ for $700. How is that not cheap and still slow? APR tested their (just) tuned GTI to hit…
I love old cars but the suspension, brake, and tire design always had a lot left to desire to put it lightly. I’m into resto-mods as long as it doesn’t lose the character of the original.
Bet it made a big difference huh? Was it worth it??
In all fairness they have definitely asked an almost identical question and probably are trying to mix it up a bit. I was going to say a tune on the right car. I guess it’s not something you can do to any car so they left it off but the performance gains on a GTI are silly.
Tune! For $600, your GTI will make an extra 35+HP/90TQ . That’s absurd price/ performance ratio considering how easy it is to do, and revert to stock.
But have you driven an old 911?
Saw this a couple days ago and I had to watch it over and over again. So funny. “What the HELL was that?”
It’s a bit of a pain parking but the front end of the 911 is so light it doesn’t matter. Above 5 mph I don’t even notice.
Haha true. Glad you got the bug and still have it today!
Absolutely. We bored ours out from 3.2 to 3.4 liters and put in Mahle pistons and 964 cams. Redline is now a bit shy of 7000 rpms and although we lost some low end torque it really opens up above 5k. Full RS-style exhaust with really no mufflers, as well as adjustable Bilstein shocks all around and torsion bars to…
I have to agree. But it could be one of those decisions: “oh 5 years ago I had the chance to buy xxxx car and I passed!”. On the other hand, it could just as easily be a mistake selling the old one.
Why? The old one is simply more fun on a windy road and one would think that Porsche could make it more fun with 30 years of development time. It’s a product of the modern car industry but his 911 would have been a totally different experience. It has no ABS, traction control, or power steering. You do everything. The…
It’s still a realistic comparison because it didn’t vastly change the driving characteristics from stock. I drove it stock many times too and although it is faster and handles better now, it was still a wave of information and feedback coming through your butt and hands. I know the reviewer in the video here says that…
Look I understand it sounds ridiculous but it’s all relative. The 997 you could just put your foot down and point the wheel where you want it to go. It’s a slow car fast/ fast car slow scenario. In this case it’s a fast car fast driving a 997 in the hills of the black forest in germany but it’s just a much different…
Relax dude. Porsche never payed the bills by being the fastest road car anyways. It was never about the fastest lap times- it was always about being a fun car to drive. I’m biased though because I get lots of seat time in my dad’s hot rodded 86 911. He emailed me today saying the dealership by us got in a GT4 with…
