The attacks mentioned in the article seem pretty random to me. As for Lee’s killer, apparently he attacked a middle-aged white guy a few weeks/months ago. It was with fists and not a knife, so he got a desk ticket and walked away.

According to NYC newspapers and local TV stations, Michelle Go’s killer first tried to push another woman (non-Asian). And Christina Yuna Lee’s murderer followed her into her building after she got out of the cab.
