from the obviously inherently subjective accounts I’ve heard from service industry workers (hostels and restaurants) in Europe and Japan, the worst tourists are the mainland Chinese and the Israelis. Rude, messy, entitled. Read more

Our greatest living actor. And I mean that sincerely. He seems to lack any self-consciousness while acting, which enables him to find choices and decisions that most actors could never dream of.

She didn’t say “Kobe Bryant was a rapist”. Nor did she say “Kobe Bryant was an alleged rapist.” She didn’t say anything, actually. She just retweeted a well-reported article about the rape case, without comment.

I would say that it is just as important as his legacy as a basketball player and his legacy as a father/husband. It is an important, un-erasable part of Kobe’s biography and choosing to omit it, as so many tributes have, is just as much of a choice as choosing to bring attention to it.

The thing is, Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show was a bigger cultural touchstone during its time than Trevor Noah’s version is now, so even if the quality is on par, the impact can’t help but be less. You basically just had Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report, back-to-back on Comedy Central for political satire. Read more

This is 100% true and also I nostalgically love it even more for the many pointless scenes of dust swirling through the mountains while the characters were hovering in mid-air. Unconditionally terrible viewing experience, but it was so specific to DBZ that I can’t remember DBZ without it.

She’s getting those chances though, slowly but surely. Small role in Galveston; supporting role in Hustlers. Obviously Sprousehart is the biggest fandom ship, so she’s the most popular actress on the show, but compare her other gigs to what Cami Mendes has lined up, or KJ Apa, and you can see that the industry Read more

Another difficulty is that you’re supposed to abstain from having sex for 2-3 days prior to each donation to improve sperm quality. That’s likely just wanting a recharge period between ejaculations, so that would also include masturbating at home...or masturbating at the clinic. A standard donation schedule is 6-10 Read more

Apple was throwing enough money at the wall that eventually something had to stick. Dickinson looked fun, too. Maybe not necessarily “good”, but at least stylish and definitely doing its own thing.

I’m still mad at the Academy for passing on Your Name. The trouble is that the Oscars are political, and a film’s American distributor can sink or swim its chances. That’s why Disney is almost always a lock to get at a nomination, regardless of the actual quality of the film. Japan’s animation industry needs to up its Read more

Agreed. I think there’s a tendency for writers to think that “oh if he’s *conflicted* about being evil, it will make for a stronger story”. But sometimes it makes the story weaker because people keep bending over backwards to give mass murderers their fiftieth chance. Read more

Because Mr. Park wrinkled his nose and made a face of disgust at Geun-sae (basement dude) who was wrestling over a weapon with Mrs. Kim. And it triggered the memory of how callously demeaning Park was during his conversation with his wife, while the Kims were hiding under the living room table, going on about how Kim Read more

Harsh. It’s the worst Bong Joon-Ho movie I’ve seen, but it’s still an objectively good movie. Chris Evans just isn’t quite good enough an actor to elevate it to “great movie”.

That paragraph is a bit vague. Because allowing children to be full, sexual beings *with each other* is totally fine: encourage positive and healthy relationships to sex and sexuality! But allowing them to be treated as such *by adults* is disturbing.

Generally, I think, surveys has shown that teenagers these days seem pretty okay about doing less drugs and having less sex than prior generations. They’re very sex-positive and supportive of decriminalization of drug-use, but many of them say “not for me, personally, right now”. Read more
