Yep, around $2 for 87 around here in MA still as well. Can be found under $2 fairly easily. With my electric rate up around $0.22 kWh, fueling up a hybrid is cheaper than going full EV, at least based on my experience with my PHEV.

It’s a nice pat on the back for affluent people.”

What part of the country are you talking about though? It is not uncommon in NE to see normal to slightly above average cars in the lots of people who you know make a decent salary. Around here it is very common to see what are $million homes and the car in the driveway costs less than the real estate taxes for the

I am in the same boat, but kids are just out of day care. I am guessing you live in a high housing cost area like I do. Being in the Boston area, we also have the most expensive day care average cost in the country. Now I am in the years of paying things back due to multiple years of >$40k/ year hit for day care

Ahh, some good FMEA talk on a Friday afternoon.  Some of the most boring, yet also important meetings.  This is where your true nerd engineer really gets his undies in a twist.

I agree. If I was looking for one, I would accept the $42-$45k used mid level range and nicer trim, I just have not seen any in the $30k range except for 5-6 year old higher mileage and low range Model S cars in my area. If I was hell bent on getting the cheapest new EV and wanted a Tesla, I would just place an order

If they can make a smaller car, and the 3 is really small already so not sure what the point would be, I would like them to use the space to keep seating available for people on the tall end of the spectrum.

I know you are trying to make a point but I don’t believe sub-$30k Teslas exist.  A 2 year old std range Model 3 is still in the low to mid $40s and that is from a non-Tesla dealer with whatever warranty might be left.

Yup, if affordability is the goal, a hybrid wins every time. It wins on price, being available right now and having zero range issues. It loses if you care about fast acceleration times and/or if you value your snobby neighbors opinion.

Can confirm. I used to visit Buffalo and saw that. Where I grew up on the other side of the state it was common to see people screen in the garage and use it as a porch for the summer months. These sometimes can be called a porage, or porch-garage.

Or normal people who also happen to be tall and these cars fit tall people really well, better than most SUV/crossovers. Add in a decent amount of rear legroom which is crucial for anyone with a modern babyseat/booster, you have a really capable package.

The problem is that what you described is exactly the rule in most areas and what people should follow. People see me walking my dog, at my kids baseball games, or while playing with my kids alone in the park look without wearing a mask as if I am doing something wrong. I wear it at work and in stores and outside only

Just happy to see that someone got to drive nearly 200,000 miles in a cool car.  Too many of these sit in a garage.  That many miles, presumably in CT, even better.

Yeah, true. I would argue cars like my PHEV are more impressive than full EV. The fact that the Sonata I have runs so smooth and hands off power from full EV, hybrid or charging modes, is amazing to me. I have 65k fairly aggressive miles on it and it just goes.

And if it was worth anything positive that outweighed all of the negative downsides and challenges, the US or EU countries would have way more influence.  China thought it was smart enough and powerful enough to pull it off, time will tell.

Same can be said for cost of fuel. A high mpg car like this could compete with a similar EV car, likely only losing to the EV in terms of higher power. If you use the higher power in the EV, just like the ICE, your range will plummet.

I believe the intent of the comment was that the skyactiv-D was teased for years and by the time it was available, diesels were no longer popular.

Unfortunately, most reviews I have seen say exactly what you say, which is a let down. Doesn’t seem like they have made it any better than the XC90 and XC60 Hybrids that suffer from the same issues.

This is exactly why I dialed back my response (although re-reading it I still sounded grumpy), I did not have your backstory and you don’t owe it to anyone. Good luck to you and I hope things work out for you.

Removed my original comment due to rage writing which is triggered anytime I see that someone seems to be taking the lazy and entitled way out.
