SHMUP has been an accepted term for the genre for at least 25 years. I remember people referring to the Turbo Grafx 16 as the go-to console for SHMUPs. I agree though that it sounds pretty lame when people actually say it out loud. Besides, “shoot-em-up” is way more fun to say.

1. Steam Big Picture Mode for the desk: I like the efficiency of the vanilla UI, but aesthetically Big Picture Mode looks better, and I think a balance could be struck if Valve did a full redesign.
